Smiling volunteers after their shaves
PUB goers raised over £10,000 for Cancer Research Wales after having their heads shaved.
The ‘A Close Shave’ gathering saw 25 brave regulars shave their heads and double their original £5,000 fund-raising target at the Maltsters Arms, Whitchurch.
Cancer Research Wales is a charity that has many close connections with the Whitchurch community and its headquarters is in Velindre Hospital.
The group of Cardiff-based volunteers included three women: Sara Milburn, Mina Kelly and Rachel Edwards.
Sara Milburn spoke of her personal reasons for taking part: “I lost my mother, Sandra, to cancer at a relatively young age and I wanted to take part in this event to help raise some much-needed money for the wonderful research projects the charity funds.”
Stylists from the nearby barbers, Terry’s Cutting Crew, carried out the head shave. Lead stylist, Louise Budd, said: “The challenge of shaving 25 heads in such a short space of time was definitely a logistical nightmare.”
Ms Budd added: “But it has been a fantastic fundraiser to be a part of and we are very happy to have helped contribute to such an important cause.”
Event organiser Alastair Milburn said: “We have had a fantastic turnout for the fund-raiser and I want to thank everyone who took part, as well as those who kindly provided donations.
“A special mention should also go to Lisa Jane, the landlady at the Maltsters Arms, who has been a great sport and hosted the event brilliantly.”
All funds for Cancer Research Wales are spent in Wales to help scientists’ pioneering cancer research projects across the country.
