CHRISTMAS is fast approaching, and there are lots of things coming up in Radyr to get you into the festive spirit. Here is The Cardiffian’s guide to some of the best events that the area has to offer this year…
November 21 – Bryn Deri Primary School Christmas Fayre
Bryn Deri Primary School’s Parent-Teacher Association are hosting a Christmas Fayre at the end of the week. The event is open to all, and residents are invited to browse at a variety of festive stalls. Refreshments will also be available.
Children will be able to visit Santa’s Grotto and buy gifts for their parents in the secret gift room.
The event will begin at 10am and finish at 12pm. There is no charge for children, but adults are required to pay a £1 entrance fee.
November 28 – Christ Church’s Get Ready For Christmas Event
All are welcome at Christ Church’s first big Christmas event of the year. Adults are invited to browse the Christmas stalls, and children are encouraged to partake in a variety of fun-packed activities. There will also be a visit from Paddy the clown.
Get Ready for Christmas starts at 11am and ends at 2pm.
December 4 – Christmas Tree Lighting
The Christmas Tree lightning event has been running for the past five years.
Secretary of Radyr and Morganstown Association, Nick Hawkins, said: “As well as the Christmas tree lighting, there will also be various craft and food stands at the event. It’s usually very well attended and it’s always a fun-packed evening.”
The trees at Morganstown and Lychgate Gardens will be switched on at 6pm, and later followed by the main switch on at Station Road at 7pm. This year, Lord Mayor of Cardiff, David Walker, will attend the event.
December 10 – Christmas Coffee Morning
Radyr and Morganstown Conservatives are hosting a coffee morning at St Elmo, 36 Heol Isaf, Radyr. The event is organised by Councillor Rod McKerlich and his wife.
Councillor McKerlich said: “The event is a fundraiser for the local Conservative party but it also attracts support across the political divide. This is, perhaps, due to the efforts my wife makes to decorate the house, including an enormous tree in the hall. There is a tombola, cake stall and a raffle and goodwill to all men and women.”
The event begins at 10.30am, but tickets are required for entrance. Tickets are £2, and can be purchased from committee members.
December 24 – Christ Church’s Sunday School Nativity Play
Residents are invited to see the local Sunday school perform this year’s nativity play. Canon Jenny Wigley said: “There will be lots of fun and excitement, lots of dressing up and lots of lovely Christmas carols for all the family.”
The production beings at 4pm at Christ Church, and will be followed by the traditional ‘Midnight Mass’ service at 11pm.
December 25 – Get Together at St. John’s
On Christmas day, local churches invite you to meet at St John’s at 9.15am and Christ Church at 11am.
Children are asked to bring one of their Christmas gifts to show the congregation. Adults are also welcome to join in and often bring lots of Christmas sweaters and musical ties to display to the group.
Canon Jenny Wigley is very enthusiastic about the event. She said: “The Rector has been known to try her hand at skateboarding down the aisle before now at the Christmas morning get together. Who knows what this Christmas will bring?”
