ST JOHN Cymru Wales are reopening their Radyr division following a two-year closure.
Leadership changes initially led to the closure of the division which saw many of the group’s leaders having to relocate, but new volunteers are working to re-launch it.
To cover a division’s running costs, St John charges organisations, such as community councils, for their services. Smaller functions such as charity events are otherwise covered for free. Extra funds raised are then passed onto the St John eye hospital in Jerusalem.
Having worked as a volunteer for the past six years, Divisional Officer, Aled Treharne, is set to take control of Radyr division.
He said: “The community around Radyr has supported St John for such a long time – it was very sad to see the division close its doors.
“It’s been a priority in the County and, in fact, for St John as a whole to re-establish the division here. It’s particularly gratifying that we are holding our Open Day within days of the division’s 95th anniversary of its original establishment.”
It is estimated that 4,000 St John volunteers provide first aid cover to people across the country. They offer essential medical assistance to people at fireworks displays, festivals, sports matches and many other events.
Last year, St John aiders spent around 215,000 hours volunteering and worked at 4,500 different events. Volunteers treated nearly 10,000 people for various injuries and medical related issues.
Mr Treharne said: “We’ve already had expressions of interest from several potential new members and we’ve even had a request to provide cover for events in the village. I’m hoping that St John will become a valued part of the community in Radyr and Morganstown.”
An Open Day will be hosted by St John for all those interested in learning more about volunteering at 10am on November 28 at Radyr Golf Club.
Manager of Radyr Golf Club, Steve Dance said: “We host a lot of charity organisations at the club and are delighted to be welcoming the Radyr branch of St John’s Ambulance.
“I am sure the training sessions from this fantastic charity will be very beneficial to the residents of Cardiff.”
Regular meetings will be held at the Golf Club from December 1 at 7pm. All are welcome, and regular first aid training will be provided every Tuesday night.
