WE visited Jamie Roberts’ old team, Rumney RFC, last Saturday ahead of Wales’ Six Nations opener versus Ireland.
Rumney RFC staff expressed pride at having once had Roberts on their books.
Club chairman, Andy Jones, explained how Roberts had always remembered his roots:
“Jamie did come through our junior section in his early days and he has been good to us. He has remembered that. He donated a couple of his Lions shirts to the club for our presentation cabinet.”
RUMNEY RFC’s 2nd XV visited St Peters RFC 2nd XV in a grudge match.
The Rumney first team’s match was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch.
Rumney were seeking retribution for a close defeat they suffered at St Peters’ hands the last time the sides met.
From waterlogged pitches to second rows kicking, the world of amateur of rugby must seem a million miles apart from Roberts’ coveted position in the professional game today.
