MORE than three tonnes of waste has been swept from the streets of Adamsdown in a week-long litter blitz.
The drive, part of Cardiff Council’s Love Where You Live Campaign, took place in Clifton Street and the surrounding areas and involved council workers and volunteers joining forces to clean the streets every day.
Constellation Street, Moira Terrace, Longcross street, System Street, and Adamsdown Lane were among 40 other streets that were targeted throughout the week.
Cardiff Council’s neighbourhood services also cleaned over 236 gullies throughout the area, using hoes and shovels to remove built up grime and prevent drain blockages.
On Thursday November 10 a community group cleared 17 bags full of litter from Anderson Fields as well as hedgerows and streets nearby. In addition, 12 volunteers from Keep Adamsdown Tidy took part in a morning litter pick in the park next to Adamsdown Primary School, with help from the council and equipment from Keep Wales Tidy.
Gwenda Owen, who helps to organise Keep Adamsdown Tidy said: “This is our second litter pick and it has been another success for our volunteers. It’s was great to work together with the local council and others to show that we love where we live.
“We also had some great conversations with locals about the area and with Keep Wales Tidy about how to prevent fly tipping.”
Keep Adamsdown Tidy and other community groups are being encouraged to get involved and inspire fellow residents to take pride in the cleanliness of their neighbourhood streets.
Councillor Bob Greenland said: “The Love Where You Live campaign is getting stronger each week and people are starting to see the benefits in their areas. We want to encourage more residents to Love Where they Live and we will continue to promote and support existing groups and any new groups which want to set up.”
But he added: “Our enforcement and education teams are out and about, we don’t want to have to fine people, but we won’t stand by and let the few ruin our streets.”
In Adamsdown, council enforcement officers investigated 13 properties and issued one fixed penalty notice for bin bags that had been left out on the wrong day.
Adamsdown residents and businesses have reacted positively to Love Where You Live’s community blitz in their area.

Rita Olim, who works at the Clifton Street Salad Bar said: “The streets do look very clean at the moment. I saw volunteers and council workers out last week, although I didn’t realise the campaign was here so it came as quite a surprise.
“I think that getting the community involved is a good idea, although I think that some problems could be fixed by more council action. I know that some residents in Adamsdown don’t have wheelie bins. I think they could really help to keep black bags off the streets.”
The Love Where You Live campaign is now working in Splott. See the Keep Cardiff Tidy website for updates about the campaign.
