Whitchurch schoolgirls hold bake sale for Children in Need

A CHARITY bake sale was organised by two Whitchurch children last weekend to raise money for Children in Need and dog’s charity Hope Rescue.
Freya Burdge, 12, and Martha Enticott, 13, invited neighbours to bring cakes and dog treats to a bake sale at Freya’s home in Foreland Road.

The girls have been running the annual sale since they were eight and nine, helped by their mothers Debbie Wharton and Amanda Burdge.
Mrs Burdge said: “They leafleted all the neighbours, asked them to bake cakes and everyone came along to buy items.”
Martha said she and Freya both enjoyed fundraising.
“We both have our own dogs and we like to fundraise for another charity, as well as Children in Need,” she said.

“We baked quite a lot of cakes and we’re selling some doggy stuff. I like how the whole community gets involved.”
Mrs Wharton said the bake sale was always a big success because of huge support from the community.
“Last year it was hammering down with rain and we had to do it inside in the kitchen. The kitchen was packed and they were queuing outside the door.
“But the fact that people still came shows there is still a lot of community spirit involved in it. Otherwise, it wouldn’t go ahead.
“They’ve raised over £1,500 so far for Children in Need. They also choose a different dog charity each year and raise funds for them as well.”
Mrs Burdge said: “Children in Need is really close to children. Our daughters see other children who aren’t as fortunate as them and they just want to help them as much as they can.
“We’ve adopted a dog from Hope Rescue and Martha and her family have a dog too. So they thought that was something that they’d really like to raise money for.
“We’ve got some really great neighbours and we’re overwhelmed by the support that we get.”
The event raised £500 for Children in Need and £114 for Hope Rescue.
