Demolishing Llandeyrn bridge 'could put children at risk'

A PEDESTRIAN footbridge over Llanedeyrn Drive is to be demolished and replaced with two zebra crossings as part of a multi-million pound redevelopment but residents say it could lead to a child’s death within six months.
“How much can you put on someone’s safety? I guarantee there will be at least one fatal accident within six months before they change it,” said resident Ulf Dahlstrom, whose petition to keep the bridge has amassed about 500 signatures in 10 days.
The underpass has already been filled in and the bridge is due to be demolished in mid to late 2019 and replaced with the zebra crossings.
The footbridge covers two blind spots caused by the hill on Llanedeyrn Drive and connects residents from the Pennsylvania Estate to the site of the new development which will include a shopping precinct.
Parents feel happy to let their children cross to the community centre on the opposite side from the estate without supervision because of the pedestrian bridge.

“It’s an accident waiting to happen as cars whizz down the hill and will not be able to see children crossing.
“I am willing to take this to the Senedd and if that doesn’t work to No 10. I am going to fight them on this and we all feel very strongly about it,” said Mr Dahlstrom.
It is likely that foot traffic will increase when the development is finished.
“I would like it to stay for the safety aspect. If the bridge has to come down then it would be nice to see it replaced,” said Cardiff councillor Frank Jacobsen, who is going to present the petition to the full council later this month or in December for review.
The Cardiffian approached the council for comment and is waiting for a response.
