Here are the events rescuing Christmas in Rhiwbina

Your guide to how to help restore festive cheer in 2020

THIS year has been full of cancelled events and changed plans. The hope of a “normal’” Christmas period is long gone, but we are looking forward to what we can do instead.

Rhiwbina Events Team has been hard at work organising its Alternative Christmas Festival so that residents can still share some festive cheer. Here are the details:

  • December 1 to 13: Best dressed shop window competition. Shops in Rhiwbina are invited to dress their window with the best festive display they can. Last year’s winner was Serenade Gift Shop. The community can vote via Facebook or by collecting a vote slip from Tenovus.
  • December 5, 4.30-8pm: Santa on Tour. The route is still being finalised, but residents in Rhiwbina are invited to wrap up warm and wave from their doorsteps as Santa tours around the village.
  • December 5, 5pm: Virtual Christmas Lights switch on. Residents are being asked to put their Christmas jumpers on and tune in to Facebook Live to watch Rhiwbina light up.
  • December 5 onwards: Christmas Treecycle Walk. Rhiwbina residents are invited to create their own Christmas tree out of recycled materials. The events team suggests only using materials that are natural and can be recycled, and steer away from glitter and other harmful materials. It’s hoped that there will be enough trees around Rhiwbina for people to enjoy on their daily exercise.
  • December 10 to 17: Seasonal Quiz. Clues will be posted in local Rhiwbina shops and quiz sheets will be collected from outside Olive Branch and Tenovus. More details will be released closer to the time.
  • December 12, 1 to 4pm: Santa Zoom Calls. Residents will be able to book a slot for a personalised Zoom call with Santa. The proceeds for this will go to Holibobs Children’s Cancer Charity. More details will be released closer to the time.
  • December 20, 5.30pm: Carols on Facebook Live. Rhiwbina Events Team will play host to Niall Allen, member of Welsh choir Only Men Aloud. The event will be broadcast for free on Facebook Live.

Further details can be found on the Rhiwbina Events Team Facebook page.
