No applications received to run Cyncoed Post Office despite local need

Petition organised after Cyncoed has been without a Post Office since July

OVER 800 residents have signed a petition to return Post Office services to Cyncoed.

The Post Office is searching for retailers who may be able to host a counter service in their shops, however they have received no applications so far.

Post Offices can be opened as new businesses by a self-employed postmaster or added as part of an existing retailer.

Cyncoed’s Post Office closed on 29th July this year. It was located in ‘Martin’s’ store run by McColls retail group, but the entire store closed.

Another Post Office inside the Spar in Lakeside was lost when that shop closed in 2018.

Cyncoed resident Pam Hartley said: “I used the post office on Cyncoed Road frequently, and used the one opposite The Discovery before that closed. Both were always busy with elderly people and also business people posting off many parcels. Local Post Offices are so important”.

Liberal Democrat Councillor for Cynoced Bablin Molik has been involved in organising the petition.

She said: “The lack of Post Office is a real concern because over 60% of our ward is elderly and they get their pensions and do their banking there.

“If they’re not driving, which many elderly people don’t, they’re having to depend on other people to do these things which is obviously affecting quality of life.”

Local resident Clive Morgan said: “Having no Post Office service is a disaster for Cyncoed. I am lucky to drive but many of us don’t.”

A Post Office spokesperson said: “We are working hard to try to restore Post Office service to the area as we know how important a Post Office is to a community.”

Cllr Molik said: “We have been contacting Post Office and they keep saying they are looking at options, but they said the same when Clearwater Post Office closed and now the service on Cyncoed Road has closed.”

The Post Office spokesperson added: “The Postmaster for Cyncoed Road Post Office resigned, and the branch closed in July. The vacancy is advertised on our website www.runapostoffice.co.uk and the field team have visited the area to speak to retailers.

“We will continue to advertise the vacancy. Alternative branches in the area include St Isan Road, Pentwyn, Llanishen and Llanedeyrn.”
