Men with knife try to steal labrador from owner in Pentwyn

The attackers fled when a dog poo bag burst over them

A 30-year-old man was walking his two dogs when three men, one armed with a craft knife, tried to steal his eight-year-old labrador.

One man grabbed the labrador’s lead while the other two pushed the owner away at knifepoint.

The men fled when a dog poo bag split and the contents burst over one of them.

The dog-owner’s face was cut by the knife close to his eyes, and he had concussion. He was taken to A&E, but is now recovering at home. His two dogs are safe and well.

The dog owner said: “The knife injuries are very close to my eyes so it could have been so much worse. The only positive is a young lady stopped to help me and called the police. She held on to my dogs while I sat down feeling dizzy and sick, shaking and bleeding all over the place. Passers by were lovely, a lady even bought me water and tissues from the shop.”

The incident happened around 12.45pm on Thursday, February 25 on the wooded trail that runs between Eastern Avenue and Rumney River near Pentwyn.

Detective Constable Kirsty Matthews said: “The victim was extremely brave and it is fortunate that he was not more seriously hurt as he did everything he could to stop the men from taking his dog.”

The suspects are described as being white and in their 20s. The first was of a slim build with a centre parting, a fair beard on his chin and he was wearing jeans and a white sweatshirt. The second was 5ft 10, slim, with brushed back fair hair and wearing a black tracksuit. The third was white, 5ft 10 and stocky.

It is believed that the suspects walked through Pentwyn and Llanrumney before and after the attempted robbery.
