Cardiff RFC face in-form Merthyr RFC this weekend in final group game
Cardiff RFC will face off at Cardiff Arms Park on Saturday.

Cardiff poised for quarters but can they overcome in-form Merthyr?

This weekend Cardiff face high scorers Merthyr in a tough game at the Arms Park

SECOND place Cardiff will look to overcome third place Merthyr RFC on Saturday in the final group game of the Eastern Indigo Group Premiership Cup..

While Merthyr do not yet have qualification to the quarter finals confirmed, only two points will get them through.

A Cardiff RFC spokesperson said: ‘’It is going to be tough; we expect a fast and open game with a lot of tries.

“Merthyr are on some rich form, have plenty of quality players and are a very strong side.’’

Cardiff will be feeling confident on the back of their first win at Pontypridd since 2009. Last weekend they won 45-6 away at the House of Pain, Sardis Road.

””The win over Pontypridd was a superb one, a victory I’m sure fans will be talking about for some time,” said Blue and Blacks supporter Dan Pearce, 27, from Cardiff.

In their last two games, Merthyr have scored 92 points. They put 31 past top spot Newport last weekend and 61 at home to Pontypridd the week before.

”It’s never possible to be fully confident going into a game against Merthyr as they have been one of the best squads in the league and have been the most successful side over the last few years,” added Mr Pearce.

”The Cardiff squad is looking relatively settled now and we are playing really good rugby, so I’d suggest we are slight favourites heading into the game. Being right at the top of the table and battling for silverware has to be the aim.”

This is the final round of group games before the quarter final spots are confirmed for the eastern division. Newport and Cardiff have already qualified, but the next two spots still hang in the balance with Merthyr, RGC and Pontypridd playing for third and fourth spot.

The quarters are due to take place around May 2022. Until then, Cardiff will compete in the Indigo Premiership which will include sides from the Western division of the WRU Premiership Cup.

Their first two games will be on the road against Llanelli and Swansea and will continue until April when the quarters, semis and final of the cup will take place.

‘’This will be a busy six months,’’ the club spokesperson added as Cardiff face both the Eastern and Western challengers for the Indigo Premiership.

”Supporters would certainly love to lift that trophy having not done so for 13 seasons now.”
