World Cup 2022 play-offs: Clean slate for yellow cards

The new ruling will affect 107 players from the remaining 12 competing nations

FIFA has confirmed that yellow cards will be wiped clean in the European play-offs for the 2022 World Cup.

The judgement now means no player will be suspended for one of the three play-off finals on 29 March for receiving a yellow card in the semi-final stage.

Wales manager Rob Page had called for the changes to the law. In November last year, he said: “It is what it is, but if we can influence a change, we absolutely will.”

Seven Wales players were one booking away from possible suspension: notably Aaron Ramsey, Joe Allen and Kieffer Moore.

Despite the rule change, players who have already collected two cautions in the group stage and not yet served a ban will still be suspended for the semi-final.

Therefore Wales will be without Joe Morrell who picked up bookings against Belgium and Estonia in qualifying.

Wales are seeking to reach their first World Cup in 64 years.
