Cardiff City release retro replica kit three decades since its debut

Bluebirds’ fans reminisce over memories of successful 1992/93 season

CARDIFF City have released a replica line of retro home shirts from their double-winning 1992/93 season.

The season saw the team winning both the English Third Division title and the Welsh Cup.

The squad was full of exciting attacking talent, featuring the division’s top scorer, Chris Pike, alongside his strike partner Carl Dale.

The offensive duo were supported by a then young and up-and-coming Nathan Blake, forming a formidable Bluebirds attack.

Cardiff-born Blake went on to become an iconic player for City, scoring 40 league goals in his four years at the club, with this season seen as a breakthrough one for him personally.

Manager Eddie May put together a skilled squad which managed to beat national rivals Wrexham to the title by just three points.

The team’s success didn’t stop there as they also tasted triumph in the Welsh Cup, beating Rhyl 5-0 in the final held on May 16, 1993 when city striker Phil Stant bagged a hat-trick.

News of the £55 kit’s re-issue and the nostalgia that surrounds it has got fans talking.

“It’s an iconic kit which represents Cardiff at the best of times at Ninian Park,” said Bluebirds fan Connor Davies, 22.

But at Cardiff Market vintage shop, Knight Vintage, there was a lukewarm reception.

“Sometimes it takes away from the value of the original shirt and some people don’t appreciate that,” said Jake Knight, 24.

“The original shirts don’t go for anything less than £150 so having the remakes, which are a little bit cheaper, opens it up to people in low-income families to get the shirt and appreciate it as much as they want to,” he added.
