Glamorgan Cricket gears up for busy 2022 season

The club will play four-day, one-day and 20-20 matches but start with a warm-up against a Cardiff universities side

GLAMORGAN has announced its pre-season schedule and fixtures for 2022 with the first match at the end of March.

The Sophia Gardens-based side will be defending their one-day Royal London Cup title, pushing for promotion to Division One in the County Championship and competing in the Vitality Blast 20-20 tournament in 2022.

Director of Cricket at Glamorgan Mark Wallace said: “After a really good winter, the players are excited for the season ahead.

“We’ve organised some tough pre-season fixtures against really strong opposition which will provide our players with a good test before the start of the County Championship season.

The first matches of the pre-season will be against Somerset and Gloucestershire, two Division one teams. The matches will be held from March 21 to 22 and March 30 to 31 respectively.

“Gloucestershire and Somerset are Division One teams, and it will be interesting to see how we measure up against them,” Mr Wallace said.

Glamorgan will also be playing against Cardiff MCCU, made up of players from Cardiff University, the University of South Wales, and Cardiff Metropolitan University, from April 2 to 4.

Cardiff MCCU were the national champions in 2021 among University sports teams and is one of six centres for cricketing excellence with players going onto play professionally.

Gethin Smart, 35 from Splott, Head Coach at Cardiff MCCU said: “Absolutely I’m looking forward to the game. It’s a big part in the summer for the team to play against the best and great training for the players and we’d like to class ourselves as a tough opposition.”

Tegid Phillips, a student at Cardiff University who plays with MCCU, signed a one-year contract in October with Glamorgan Cricket and is one of the many aspiring cricketers on the MCCU team. Which team he will play for in April was still up in the air, Mr Smart said.

Mr Smart said: “I’m a big supporter of Glamorgan and have been all my life. I was the type of child who ran on the pitch. At MCCU, we’ve got a vested interest in Glamorgan and its success. It’s great to see how they’re getting on and they did so well with the Royal London Cup.”

Glamorgan Cricket’s season will then kick off at home on April 7 as the LV= County Championship begins with a match against Durham. The county championship will end in September with a match away against Sussex.

In between the club will play their seven home Blast fixtures in June and will defend their one-day cup crown with matches in August.

Head of operations at Glamorgan Dan Cherry said: “It’s always an exciting time of year when the fixtures are released and it’s once again looking like another action-packed summer of cricket for our members and supporters to enjoy.

“It’s particularly pleasing to enter the campaign as Royal London Cup defending champions and we hope to continue that success across all formats this season.”
