6 Music Festival kicks off a summer of live music in Cardiff

Little Simz, Idles, Bloc Party and Pixies will be performing at the festival

CARDIFF is set to play host to some of the UK’s biggest musical acts with news the BBC 6 MUSIC Festival is coming to the city in April.

Brits award winner Little Simz will be part of a line-up that includes Bloc Party, Idles and rock stalwarts Johnny Marr and Pixies as part of the three-day extravaganza.

The news follows the announcement of two huge gigs at Cardiff Castle in June and July featuring Pete Tong and Madness.

This morning, BBC Radio 6 announced their popular 6 Music festival will be taking place in Cardiff from Friday 1 – Sunday 3April.

The event takes place in a different city each year, with last year’s festival being held virtually in Camden and streamed on BBC iPlayer.

Since 2014, the festival has featured artists such as: Bicep, Laura Marling and Brittany Howard.

Events will be held in the daytime at Tramshed, while St David’s Hall, The Great Hall (Cardiff University Students Union) and Y Plas (Cardiff University Students Union) will host evening gigs.

Tramshed will also play host to 6 Music late, a club night featuring DJs including Craig Charles, Nemone and David Holmes plus special guests following the live gigs.

Friday

  • St David’s Hall – Little Simz (Brit Award Best Newcomer winner), Mykki Blanco, Curtis Harding and Deyah.
  • The Great Hall – Pixies, Idles, Lucy Dacus.
  • Y Plas – Ibeyi, Poji and Obongjayar.

Saturday

  • The Great Hall – Bloc Party, Sports Tea and Beabadoobee.
  • St David’s Hall – Khruangbin, Ezra Collective, Ibibio Sound Machine.
  • Y Plas – Gwenno

Sunday

  • The Great Hall – Wet Leg, Self Esteem and Johnny Marr.
  • St David’s Hall – Father John Misty with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, Cat Power, Gruff Rhys and Audiobook.

This morning also saw Pete Tong announce his return to Cardiff after a four-year absence with his Ibiza Classics show on July 8 at Cardiff Castle.

The show started in 2016 with Conductor Jules Buckley and features club classics with Heritage Orchestra.

Late last week, Madness also announced they will be performing at the castle this summer on Wednesday 1st June.

Both events are organised by Depot Live, the live music company associated with the venue Depot.
