On St Mary’s Street, a fire escape can be seen dangling from the roof above Westminster House and PopWorld.

Just after 10am, South Wales Police reported that the roof of the Co-op filling station on Pontypridd Road, Barry, was lost due to high winds. Police are urging the public to avoid the area.

Store manager of Co-op Weycocks Cross Darren Willcock said: “Co-op Weycocks Cross is currently closed to all vehicles and pedestrians due to forecourt canopy damage.

“Please do not make a trip to the store! We have the emergency services on site.”

The roof of the Tesco in Cardiff Bay is also reported to have blown off, according to eyewitnesses.

Police reported that a house on Colcot Road, Barry, had its roof blown off shortly before 11am and warned residents to avoid that area as well.

And on Thompson Street, Barry, South Wales Police reported that solar panels and concrete blocks are coming off a building. Residents have been warned to avoid the area.

Robert Bond, 70, from Llanishen, reported that his neighbour’s tree had gone through the roof of his shed, leaving a massive hole.

His son, Paul Bond, said: “I’m a little disappointed as we’ve been telling the council for years that it’s unsafe. This isn’t the first time big branches have come down either so it was only a matter of time before it done some serious damage.

“Luckily there was nobody around when it did.”

On Cowbridge Road East, a bus stop sign has been reported to be dangerously blowing out into the road, near Canton Library.

A spokesperson from EVAC Cardiff said: “We are receiving numerous reports of fallen trees, roof tiles and cladding from buildings in the city centre and across Cardiff.

“Please only venture outside if absolutely necessary during this current period of danger.”
