Place Rangers apprentices wanted at Grange Pavilion

A new team of rangers will be working towards creating more green spaces in Grangetown

GRANGE Pavilion is looking for two apprentices to join its new Place Rangers’ team, with the aim of making Grangetown a greener place.

Applicants can be between 16 and 60 years old and will be supporting Helen Malia and Charlotte Brown, the new park rangers, to support the community gardening groups in Grangetown.

Apprentices will be working full time and will get their Level 2 Countryside Worker qualification while earning £18,562 pro rata.

Sophie Mills, centre manager at Grange Pavilion said: “We started up a community garden and then we realised there is a lot of need for green spaces in Grangetown.

“So, we applied for funding to build relationships with people and bring communities together to make them greener.”

The rangers will be working closely with Grange Pavilion community interest organisation (CIO), Cardiff Council and community groups like ‘Friends of Grange Gardens’ and Keep Grangetown Tidy, police, educational partners and other community organisers.

A regular Sunday meeting will be held at 10.30am at the Pavilion to talk about future plans.

The first meeting will happen on February 27 and this will be an opportunity to meet the rangers, chat about existing projects and suggest new ones.

Grange Pavilion applied to Cardiff Council for the Community renewal grant and was awarded £65,565 to fund the project.

Part of the rangers’ role within the community is delivering guided walks between Grangetown’s greenspaces. Grangemoor Park, The Marl, and Sevenoaks Park will be part of the tour, with rangers commenting on wildlife.

“It’s all about getting the community to be different and think about the environment. They will be doing lessons and inviting volunteers to get involved,” said Ali Abdi, Community Gateway Partnerships Manager and Grangetown community organiser.

Fiona McAllister, Keep Grangetown Tidy organiser, said: “We are really excited about the new Place Rangers and look forward to working with them to make Grangetown a cleaner, greener place to live.”

“We’re particularly keen to collaborate as we look after three growing spaces of our own, with the Stockland Street community planters,” she added.
