Facilities at the historic park have been called ‘old, worn and dangerous’
A PETITION to refurbish Splott Park which gained 600 signatures is due to be presented to council decision-makers.
On Monday night, Splott councillors Ed Stubbs, Jane Henshaw and Huw Thomas held a meeting with council officers to discuss what residents would like to see.
Coun Stubbs said: “Refurbishment of the play area was the main point, but teenagers have asked about gym equipment.
“Residents also mentioned the need for all parks to be more inclusive and asked about having more benches.”
The councillors have met with resident Laura David, who started the petition, plus others supporting the petition and will present it to the council on Thursday, March 17.
Ms David, 36, said: “Splott Park has been neglected for years. The facilities are old, worn and dangerous.
“Many other areas have had a refurbishment, with new equipment for the children to play on, but Splott Park has had nothing for years. The park is used by many locals, for bike riding, dog walking, sports, general play and socialising.”
Since one of the areas that has recently seen a refurbishment was Llandaff Fields play area, residents suggest that it is primarily wealthier areas that are prioritised for funding.
Splott Park was created between 1902 and 1907, when Lord Tredegar donated 18 acres of land to the Cardiff Corporation to create a recreational space for the people of Splott.
Originally it had a bandstand, facilities for tennis, bowls and swimming.
Describing Splott Park back in 1906, an article from the Western Mail stated: “Here the large crowd, of all ages and degrees of life, sported to their heart’s content. They had left the streets to expand their lungs in the open.
“The bowling green was in full swing; the cricket enthusiasts and baseball players swarmed the plots allotted to them.”
The historic article went on to recommend further development of the park including another bowling green, tennis court, croquet ground and quoit pitches.
Residents hope that Splott Park will see another redevelopment that can transform the park into a key part of the community once again.
