Cardiff Council made just over £1m from 52,000 parking fines in 2021
RHYMNEY Street made Cardiff Council the highest revenue from parking fines last year while Windsor Place drivers received the most tickets, The Cardiffian can reveal.
A Freedom Of Information request found that the council received £1,150,455 after issuing 52,074 parking fines across Cardiff last year. Of this, 5,050 were rescinded following appeals.
Cardiff Council’s website states that a penalty will either be £50 or £70 depending on the type of contravention, although this figures is reduced by 50% if paid within 14 days.
Of the top 20 of streets which saw the highest number of parking fines issued in 2021, Cathays and the City Centre contained the most. With Cathays receiving 4,674 alone.
The number one reason for receiving a fine was “no permit being displayed”, with a total of 16,118 tickets being presented for this reason.
The Cardiffian previously reported that Cardiff Council oversells resident parking permits in Cathays by up to 300%.
In particular, on Rhymney Street, the council has sold 201 parking permits despite there being only 63 resident bays.
Rachel Thomas, a resident on Rhymney Street, finds parking on the street “a nightmare”.
She said: “If I want to go to the shop, then by the time I return then my space has gone.
“People literally park where they want, just take a walk up the street, there are parking fines everywhere.”
Natasha Wilson, another Rhymney Street resident, told The Cardiffian: “I got a parking fine from the council for parking around the corner from my house due to no spaces on my street.”
Despite Rhymney Street recording the highest revenue, Windsor Place in the city centre saw the highest number of parking fines issued in 2021.
Situated close to the Capitol Shopping Centre and Queen Street, drivers on Windsor Place were subject to 1,006 tickets being issued last year.
A Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) isn’t a criminal offence. It is classed as a civil offence and will not create a criminal record.
