Victoria Park to host Queen’s Baton Relay on its 294-day journey

Cardiff Beach Volleyball Centre will pass the torch as it travels 90,000 miles around the Commonwealth

VICTORIA Park has been selected as the only stopping point in Cardiff for this year’s Queen’s Baton Relay.

The event is held every four years to celebrate the beginning of the Commonwealth games, which is due to start in Birmingham on July 28.

In October last year, the Baton began its journey at Buckingham Palace where the Queen placed her Commonwealth message inside the Baton.

Since then, the Baton has been making its way through the 72 nations and territories which are part of the Commonwealth.

It will be passed from Newport to Cardiff on July 3.

Here, the torch will be carried through the Canton park and its volleyball centre for one hour, in celebration of the relay’s 16-year anniversary.

Carl Harwood, 58, is an owner of the Cardiff Beach Volleyball Centre which started out in Barry before moving to Victoria Park five years ago where it has hosted numerous Welsh national teams.

“We are having a meeting next Thursday to talk about our plans. We will discuss ideas of school competitions to decide who will hold the torch and decide the Baton’s route,” he said.

Having grown up around Fairwater, Carl is about excited for the upcoming event.

He added: “We want to show what a wonderful community Victoria Park has to offer. I want residents, councillors and students to be part of the event.”
