Four of the road’s 16 cafes, restaurants and takeaways are rated one-star out of five
SALISBURY Road has the highest number of food outlets in Cathays rated at one star by the Food Standard Agency (FSA).
Cathays is on the outskirts of central Cardiff and home to a high student population with a variety of bars, pubs, and restaurants.
Salisbury Road is one of the suburb’s busiest thoroughfares and there are 16 cafes, restaurants and takeaways to buy food, with many remaining open until the early hours of the morning.
Every one of those premises is rated by The Food Standards Agency judges’ on the cleanliness and conditions of the facility, and the management of food safety.
The FSA’s scheme gives a rating from five to zero. Five is at the top end of the scale, meaning the hygiene standards are very good and comply with the law. Zero is at the bottom end of the scale, meaning urgent improvement is necessary.
Of the 16 premises on Salisbury Road, six are rated as five stars, two as four stars and one as three stars – but four are rated as one star.
Compared to the other main streets in Cathys with a high number of food outlets, Cathays Terrace has 12 food premises but none rated as one star, Woodville Road has 14 but none rated as one star, and Crwys Road has 30 rated but none on one star.
The reasons premises may struggle with food inspection ratings include failure to correctly complete the paperwork, and as such a low rating does not always mean a premises is not hygeinic.
We approached the restaurants on Salisbury Road that were rated below three stars for comment.
