Man, 39, in critical condition after being airlifted to hospital following 9am incident in Butetown

Police have arrested a 33-year old man after the incident at the Huggard Centre near Hansen Street in Butetown

A MAN has been arrested following an assault in Butetown this morning which left a victim in critical condition.

A statement from South Wales Police said: “We can confirm that a 33 year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of an assault which occurred on Hansen Street, Cardiff, at approximately 9am today (Friday, January 31).”

A 39 year-old man is being treated at the University Hospital of Wales where his condition is described as critical.

A police cordon remains in place at the scene of the incident on Hansen Street.

This incident occured outside The Huggard Centre in Butetown, close to Cardiff city centre.

An air ambulance landed on Callaghan Square and flew the victim to hospital, while a police helicopter, three police cars and four police vans were also quickly on the scene.

Police issued this statement via their social media channels this morning.

“Police officers are currently at the scene of an incident which occurred on Hansen Street at approximately 9am today.

“We can confirm that a man has been airlifted to the University Hospital of Wales with serious injuries.

“An investigation into the incident, which is suspected to be an assault, is now underway.

“A police cordon has been set up and Hansen Street has been closed. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.

“Anybody who was in the area at the time who may have seen what happened is urged to contact 101. Please give reference *2500032515.”
