Where to watch the Super Bowl in Cardiff: The pubs showing Kansas City Chiefs v Philadelphia Eagles

The full list of bars in Cardiff showing the biggest match in American football

THIS Sunday night the Super Bowl kicks off at 11.30pm and if you’d rather watch the big game with like-minded fans rather than at home then there are plenty of choices for where to watch.

Kansas City Chiefs are taking on the Philadelphia Eagles and the NFL has grown in popularity across the UK in the past few years and that is why ITV is showing it live.

But 11 pubs and bars in the capital are also staying open until the early hours of the morning so that fans can head out to watch the big game together in a proper Super Bowl party atmosphere.

“I’m expecting it to be quite busy because we’ve got a good sound system, we’ve got the TV outside, we’ve got quite decent sized TV’s inside as well,” said John Dow, bar manager at Boom Battle Bar.

“We can always switch the commentary on for people who enjoy it, but I have heard quite a few people say they’re gonna come in and watch it. I am hoping it is going to be busy.

“We’re having the kitchen open later for it, so people will be able to order wings, fries, all that good stuff until relatively late in the evening.”

What foods and drinks are the most popular with fans of American football?

“I’d say the usual beer and chicken wings but that is obviously people trying to get in with the American culture because it’s a big thing over there,” said Boom’s bar manager John.

Church Street’s Head of Steam is also staying open for the game.

“I think we’ve got 80 tables booked in for the evening,” said Hector Kelly, a bar worker at Head of Steam.

“You have to get a special licence if you do want to stay open past your normal time but I think that every venue in Cardiff is allowed 40 per year so it’s not that hard to get.”

It’s not just Cardiff residents that are getting excited about the game.

“We have had a lot of Americans in asking if we’re doing the Super Bowl,” said Kyle, a bar worker at Owain Glyndwr who didn’t want to give his last name.

“We have 50 bookings already, we’re staying open until 4am so to my knowledge we have 50 bookings already for it but it might be more now because that was last week.”

Among those going to the Owain Glyndwr will be members of the Cardiff Valkyries, the only women’s American football team in Wales.

And if the match whets your appetite for more, then the club is looking for new members.

“Everyone is the right kind of person, you don’t have to be a certain type of body because we need so many different types of people to fill defence and offence,” said Sophie Nicol, the Valkyries social media manager.
