Man, 25, robbed and stabbed near Taff Trail and student centre at Talybont

The victim was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries

A MAN was stabbed near the Taff Trail and the student sports complex at Talybont in Gabalfa on Monday night (March 24).

The 25-year-old victim was taken to hospital with non-life threatening injuries but has since been discharged.

South Wales Police received a report of a robbery at 9pm near the Cardiff University Sports Training Village, behind Excelsior Road off Western Avenue leading to the Tesco Extra retail park.

A police statement said: “A 25-year-old man suffered stab wounds which were thankfully not life-threatening, and he has been discharged from hospital. An investigation is ongoing.

“​Tackling the harm that knife crime causes is an absolute priority for South Wales Police.

A spokesperson for the National Police Air Service added: “On Monday March 24, at 9:27pm, a police helicopter crew, from NPAS Almondsbury, was deployed to the area of Cardiff in support of South Wales Police.

“The helicopter was requested to support a ground policing operation. Total flight time was 37 minutes.”

Cardiff University confirmed that no students were involved.

“We are aware of an incident that took place close to University residences last night,” a university spokesperson confirmed.

“University Security immediately attended to provide support and assistance to any residents who may have witnessed or have been impacted by the incident.

“They also increased patrols throughout the Talybont Residences sites and maintained an increased presence onsite overnight. 

“We are advised that no students were involved or injured. However, some students may have witnessed the incident and will be rightly upset and concerned.

“If anyone has any concerns about their personal safety whilst on campus or witnesses any suspicious activity, they should report it immediately to our Security Control Room or South Wales Police, in the event of a serious incident.” 

One student said that news of the incident quickly spread.

Holly Hammond, a student at Cardiff University, said: “I was in the sports centre when someone I was with had something sent through on a university group chat about the stabbing.

“We spoke to reception who called security and then they kind of held us in until we knew more and then let us go home.”

Uber taxi driver, Glenn Jason, who works in the area, said: “The woods behind the sports centre is known to be dangerous. A lot of trouble happens down there late at night.”
