‘Menace’ with history of domestic abuse pushed girlfriend down the stairs when she might have been pregnant

Ieuan Evans, 29, was jailed by judge who told him: ‘You have an appalling record of violence’

A MAN with a string of convictions for violence pushed his partner down a flight of stairs despite knowing she might have been pregnant with his child, Cardiff Crown Court heard.

Ieuan Evans went on to grab the woman’s hair and shout abuse at her, the court was told.

Evans was at her house on December 14 last year when he became annoyed at her for allegedly drinking when she might have been pregnant, said prosecutor Georgina Buckley.

The defendant, of Howard Drive, Caerphilly, then pushed her down a flight of stairs despite the suspected pregnancy, said Ms Buckley.

In a separate incident in January 2025, the defendant smashed his girlfriend’s TV, costing £200 of damage, said Ms Buckley.

And on January 20, 2025, Evans hurled abuse at his girlfriend, calling her a “****ing scumbag”, and threatened to “smash her face in,” said Ms Buckley.

Later that day, Evans gripped both sides of his girlfriend’s hair and screamed in her face, at which point she called the police and Evans was arrested, said Ms Buckley.

In a police interview, Evans said the allegations against him were a “bunch of lies”.

Edward Mitchard, defending, said: “The defendant has had issues with alcohol, and was in a toxic relationship. He has no intention of rekindling that relationship.

“While in custody, the defendant passed a site safety certificate so he can start work in the building industry when he is released.”

Evans has 16 previous convictions arising from 29 offences. The most relevant was in 2019 when he punched a former partner, causing cuts to her head.

Evans pleaded guilty to two charges of common assault and one charge of criminal damage.

Sentencing him on March 26, Recorder Andrew Hammond told Evans: “You have an appalling record of violence and history of domestic abuse. You pose a menace to those who encounter you.

“You have reached a stage whereby any prospect of rehab is not there. The protection of the public from you is at the forefront of the court’s mind.”

Recorder Hammond jailed Evans for six months. Evans will serve 40% in custody, followed by a 12-month post-sentence supervision.

Evans was also made subject to a five-year restraining order.
