Cardiff joins global fitness craze as Principality Stadium hosts Wales’s first Hyrox
MORE than 6,000 athletes descended on the Principality Stadium over the weekend as Cardiff hosted Wales’s first Hyrox event.
The three-day event saw 6,042 people tackle the world’s largest mass-participation fitness race.
Hyrox was founded in Germany in 2018 by race organiser Christian Toetzke and Olympian Moritz Fürste.
Since then, 219 races have been held worldwide – 73 of them this year alone.
The Cardiff event featured 14 divisions and attracted competitors of all ages and abilities, with tickets costing around £120.
The sport combines functional fitness and endurance, with athletes completing a one-kilometre run followed by a workout station repeated eight times.
The workouts consist of a 1,000m ski, 50m sled push, 50 sled pull, 80m burpee jump, 1,000m row, 200m farmers’ carry, 100m lunges and, finally, 100 wall balls.
The high-intensity challenge has grown rapidly in popularity, attracting both elite and amateur athletes.
Cardiff has now joined global cities like New York, Paris and Hong Kong in hosting the Hyrox race. The next will be held in Chicago on June 12.
