The Local Government Association’s annual fire conference and exhibition opened in Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium today.
The event, which will run until 1pm tomorrow, will focus on Sir Ken Knight’s independent review of the fire and rescue service which highlighted the ability for million of pounds of savings and called for closer cooperation between fire services.
The Lord Mayor of Cardiff, Coun Derrick Morgan addressed the conference this morning and a number of politicians, including Brandon Lewis MP, Minister for Fire, and his shadow cabinet counterpart Lyn Brown MP, are due to speak tomorrow.
The conference follows a strike by fire fighters last December in protest at Government plans to reform their pensions.
Changes to the way the fire service works are top of this year’s agenda as well, with delegates set to debate privatisation and whether or not on-call fire fighters are the best way to serve the public.
