NEARLY a hundred homes will be built on the old Llanrumney High School site on Ball Road after plans were approved by Cardiff council.
Wates Residential will build 98 houses – 28 of those will be affordable housing to comprise:
- 8 x two-bedroom houses
- 6 x three-bedroom houses
- 2 x four-bedroom houses
- 7 x one-bedroom apartments
- 5 x bedroom apartments

Private housing will comprise:
- 2 x bedroom flats
- 11 x three-bedroom houses
- 49 x four-bedroom houses
- 7 x five-bedroom houses
Councillor Ali Ahmed said: “It is a fantastic scheme, especially with the affordable housing, which is very badly needed.”
Residents had raised concerns over potential flooding. Natural Resource Wales – a government body designed to protect the environment – said there was an increased flood risk and recommended constructing a “scrape”.
A scrape is a depression in the ground with sloping grass edges to hold water. If there is heavy rain, water will pool at the bottom and be absorbed by the land or passed to the nearby river.
Wates Residential said this will also attract wildlife, describing it as a “sustainable solution”.
Councillor Frank Jacobsen said: “It is a great development and it is great to see that we are having more houses being built in Cardiff.
“We still get our dog walking space next to it. There is great opportunity to build a road into the park and ride (East),” he added.
A link road to the A48 through the back of the estate is being explored to ease traffic congestion.
This development falls under Cardiff Council’s Cardiff Living scheme, which promises to build 1,500 new properties across the city to boost first-time buyer numbers.
