ORGANISERS behind Cardiff’s Save the Coal Exchange campaign were due to meet today (November 10) to discuss the award of a £10,000 grant.
The Cardiff Coal Exchange is to receive £10,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund to aid the restoration of the Grade II listed building.
Local MP Stephen Doughty, a keen supporter of the campaign, said: “I am delighted those bringing this wonderful building back into use are getting the help they need.”
Built in 1886, the Coal Exchange is one of the most familiar buildings in Cardiff. It was the site of the world’s first £1,000,000 business exchange.
While news of the grant is welcome, the campaign is seeking further investment to fund its restoration.
Lisa Power, a Director of Save the Coal Exchange said: “We have every reason to feel positive that the exchange can once again be a lynchpin in this historic part of Cardiff.”
The campaign aims to revive the building following its part-closure in 2013.
It is hoped it can be restored so it can hold music and other public events and used as a set for TV shows as in the past.
