An outdoor gym and small playground are included in the plans
WINDSOR Gardens is set for a makeover after plans were approved at the Radyr and Morganstown Community Council.
The plans show a comprehensive remodelling of the Radyr park, featuring play equipment, a wooded canopy and a new footpath.
It includes new seating areas and an archway at the entrance with signs in Welsh and English.
The Twinning Stone – commemorating the 38-year friendship between Radyr and Morganstown and its French sister town, St Philbert De Grand Lieu – will be moved to the south of the garden and laid in a dry garden bed surrounded by plant boxes.
Landscape gardener Jim Goodwin first presented the design options to the Community Council in November 2023 “to make it worthy of its central village location”.
He said: “I was involved with the Community Council’s Environmental and Regeneration Committee at the time, and we – myself and the Chair – wanted the same thing: to upgrade the garden and make it more representative of the town.
“We did a survey and talked to a few members of the public and put together a plan of what they wanted, including one item of children’s play equipment and three or four pieces of ‘trim trail’ equipment, introducing a keep fit element into the gardens,” Mr Goodwin said.
Windsor Gardens – on the corner of Windsor Road and Heol Isaf – is managed by the Community Council.
Radyr resident Jacob Murphy said: “Windsor Gardens is an appreciated piece of greenery in the centre of Radyr and its improvement can only stand to brighten the area and make it even more inviting.
“I feel it will have a significant impact on the community and change the space from something nice to look at from afar, into somewhere people can go and access to be with the wider Radyr community.”
Now that plans have been officially approved, the Community Council is assessing the project’s costs and exploring available grants in addition to public funding, as confirmed in the full council meeting on November 21, 2024.
“It’s a long project, hopefully, we should have something more concrete to report in January or February when we know if it is feasible in this financial year and when builders will be available,” said Coun. Iona Shariff of the Environment and Regeneration Committee.
Windsor Gardens serves as the centre for several much-loved community events, including the highly anticipated lighting of the Radyr Christmas tree which is set to take place on December 6 at 7pm.
