WALES’ First Minister Carwyn Jones visited small businesses in Whitchurch today, following his election pledge to cut their taxes.
The visit to Whitchurch Village marks the start of a series of local tours for the First Minister in the lead-up to the National Assembly election in May.
The tour began at 1pm in Deli a GoGo, before moving along to other stores on Merthyr Road – including the Cardiff Bed and Furniture Centre and the Village Gift Box.
Cardiff North AM, Julie Morgan, and Whitchurch councillors Ben Thomas and Jonathan Evans joined the Welsh Labour team for the afternoon.
The First Minister said: “We’re highlighting our pledge at the beginning of the week about tax cuts for small businesses – half of small businesses to pay nothing and three-quarters to pay less.
“This is a chance for businesses to express concerns.
“There have been tough times over the past five years, but we must ensure high streets remain busy.”
Regarding Labour’s election prospects in Cardiff North, the First Minister said: “Areas swing back and forth.
“Julie Morgan is a fantastic candidate for Cardiff North. I’m here to support her. She has done a brilliant job for the past five years and more.”
Deli a GoGo owner Bev Davidson said: “We’re very happy that the First Minister chooses to talk personally and properly to small businesses.
“If he gleans something from that, then that’s a good thing.”
As well as tax cuts for small businesses, Labour unveiled the following pledges:
- Free childcare for working parents
- A new treatment fund for life-threatening illnesses
- Double the capital limit for those going into residential care
- An extra £100m to improve school standards.
The National Assembly elections will be held on May 5.
