Customers were asked to donate what they could in exchange for tucking in at Tin Can Kitchen next door to the Cardiff City Stadium
FOODIES in Canton were treated to free burgers and fries as part of a charity cook-off.
The cook-off was held by Tin Can Kitchen, a takeaway restaurant a few yards from the Cardiff City Stadium on Sloper Road, which specialises in Cajun and Southern inspired cooking.
Between 10am and 5pm on February 22, customers could claim their free burger and fries, in exchange for a donation to the Cardiff City FC Community Foundation which supports children, young people, and families across South Wales.
People were encouraged to donate whatever they could afford, with a suggested donation of £5.
Customers could choose between either a beef burger, cheeseburger, or veggie burger, along with a portion of the restaurant’s signature Cajun fries.
The money raised will go towards the foundation’s work.
The cook-off scheme has been part of Tin Can Kitchen’s calendar for years, with previous events raising money for charities in the Gwent valleys.
Co-owner Jordan Phillips, 39, said: “We do this every year. Ever since we started, we’ve raised money for Mind in both our Newport branch and our old Cwmbran branch.”
The Canton venue opened its doors in November 2024, making this the first time they’ve held a cook-off in their new home.

Mr Phillips said: “We’ve raised thousands of pounds over the years, and we’re hoping to be able to do the same here.
“This is what we do, we like to give back as much as we can to the community.”
While the cook-offs raise money for good causes, the owners believe that the scheme is at the heart of what their business is about.
“Selling burgers puts food on the table, but this is the sort of stuff that gets us up in the morning,” Mr Phillips said.
The scheme went down a treat with customers.
One customer, Cora Collier, 24, said: “I saw the scheme and immediately was like ‘Yeah, I’d love to donate.’
“It really encourages people and shows that local businesses are in tune with the community. I think it’s great.”
The owners have plans to repeat the cook-off.
“They take a lot of time, money, and effort to organise, but hopefully this is the first of many,” said Mr Phillips.
Cardiff City FC were full of praise for the event.
A club spokesperson said: “Fundraisers like this are a fantastic example of how unique community initiatives can bring people together while making a real difference.
“We’re incredibly grateful to Jordan and the Tin Can Kitchen team for their support in helping us change lives and transform communities across South Wales.
“We look forward to seeing more businesses and organisations take creative approaches in the future to support our community and educational initiatives within Cardiff City FC communities.”
