Around 80 protestors joined together on grass outside Cardiff Castle on Friday 11 November to form the first Occupy Cardiff.
The group, who met underneath the statue of NHS Founder Aneurin Bevan at two o’clock, made a series of speeches which turned into lively chanting and drumming. As the movement has no designated leader, as many participants as possible were encouraged to share their views and wishes for the occupation with onlookers.
The group peacefully pitched 10 tents whilst around 20 police, legal-observers and countless bystanders looked on.
Several hours police attempted to disband the camp, enforcing a 19th century by-law and legislation created for the removal of ravers. By this point only 30 or so protestors remained, and police reinforcements arrived.
A stand-off ensued, resulting in the arrest of six protestors under the grounds of failing to adhere to a direction to leave land when ordered to do so.
