Today as it happened: Grand Slam, Welsh language Census, Black History

On a huge weekend for Welsh sport, we looked at Wales’ chances of winning a Six Nations Grand Slam in Paris, the South Wales derby and the unveiling of Gemma Grainger as the new Wales Women’s manager.

Away from the sport, we also covered the controversy surrounding the Welsh language options on the census and a brand new environmental mural in Grangetown.

Coming up on CJS at 4

CJS at 4 newsreader Lowri Pitcher has a sneak preview at what we can expect from our 4 o’clock bulletin.

15:07

East Vs West

As Swansea City prepare to take on Cardiff at in the South Wales Derby tomorrow, we spoke to two of our sport reporters to see their predictions for tomorrow’s big game.

Caleb Darwin, CJS’s self- proclaimed “resident Cardiff City fan” is backing Mick McCarthy’s Blues and predicts a 2-1 win for City.

Henry Payne points out that that Cardiff have only lost once in their last fourteen games and are on top form. But because of Swansea’s strong defence, he reckons it will be a 1-1 draw.

Give us a laugh!

With it being Comic Relief today, here’s a selection of our reporters telling us their very best (and worst) jokes. We apologise in advance…

Coming up at 2

12:50

Round and round and round…

There’s big news for cycling fans in Cardiff as plans have emerged to relocate the Maindy Velodrome to the Cardiff International Sports Village. It comes as the current location is slated to taken over by Cathays High School.

The track has previously been home to a certain Geraint Thomas… I wonder what happened to him?

Our reporter Aliraza Manji has been out and about and, as you can tell from the photo below, he’s been really getting into the spirit of things!

12:43

Today’s Coronavirus Briefing

The First Minister Mark Drakeford is currently giving an update on the current coronavirus situation in Wales.

The main headlines are:

  • Everyone who is scheduled for a second dose will still be able to receive one
  • No pre-existing appointments will be cancelled this month
  • There are two clusters of cases in Anglesey and Merthyr Tydfil
  • People need to engage more with contact tracing

The First Minister also encouraged people to only watch Saturday’s rugby with their own household.

12:33

A new curriculum

Much has been written over the last few weeks on the new curriculum being implemented here in Wales, but there’s one specific aspect that is being celebrated today by activists.

Welsh Education Minister Kirsty Williams announced today that black history will be taught to all pupils, in a victory for campaign groups.

Wales has a long history of BME figures, with some of the most prominent figures being headmaster Betty Campbell and rugby player Clive Sullivan.

12:17

Which box should I tick?

There’s growing concern amongst Welsh speakers surrounding the options for the Welsh language on the 2021 census.

Currently, there’re four options for Welsh on the census, ‘Speak Welsh’, ‘Read Welsh’, ‘Understand Welsh’ and ‘Write Welsh’ and some campaigners are urging Welsh speakers of all levels to tick all four boxes.

Cymdeithas yr Iaith (Welsh Language Society) are behind the campaign and told our reporters that they feel that there’s an inconsistency as there’s only one option for the English language.

11:51

Live at the Principality

Our reporter Seb Bench has been out and about around Cardiff, getting ready to preview the all-important Wales v France rugby match.

Can Wales hold on and claim a second Grand Slam in three years?
