Artists are sketching a brighter future for Wales

Young artists are giving Wales the self-confidence to sketch out a brighter future and bring out their Welsh identity.

Local artists of Cardiff are working together with YesCymru to show a new self-confidence to their Welsh identity and culture with hopes towards a brighter future.

Culture is an important factor when it comes to Welsh identity. YesCymru invites young artists in Cardiff to exhibit their artworks to play an important role in the celebration of their Welsh heritage through their artwork.

“Being a Welsh speaker, and being from an area of Wales renowned for its use of slang, I decided to really celebrate that youthful aspect of language,” said one of the artists featured, Twinkle and Gloom.

The artist started incorporating Welsh elements into her work back in 2015 or 2016 and said: “The use of slang is often shamed, and seen as bad Welsh, but in my opinion, all forms of the language is great and for a language to survive it has to evolve.”

Apart from celebrating the Welsh identity, the artist also blends in the message of feminism into her artworks. They said: “There’s so much pressure on women in society and there are so many things I read and hear that make me angry, so I create these tongue-in-cheek drawings to vent that frustration.”

“A lot of the phrases used by my Welsh ladies are loosely inspired by the strong Welsh women in my life and so I feel like they are a tribute to a lot of the Female Welsh voices I hear everyday,” said Twinkle and Gloom.

With the support given by the Government to Welsh art, Twinkle and Gloom hope that it will continue. “I am creating a world that comforts me and through the process, I hope to bring comfort to anyone else that can relate to the pieces that create a world where outsiders aren’t outsiders at all.”

“I would like to see more young artists with less traditional art getting chances to exhibit to embrace their voices and celebrate who you are,” said Twinkle and Gloom.
