Blackweir Bridge re-opens: What Cardiff people think when having their bridge back

After almost a year of closing, Cardiff has their bridge back, which had been closed by the council due to the social-distancing rule in April 2020.

The Blackweir Bridge, in Bute Park, Cardiff has its meaning in creating convenience for the citizen and was built by engineering students from Cardiff University in 1980, got a green light to reopen this year after the long repairment being carried out and COVID took a turn for the better.

The council closed the bridge in April last year due to people were not social-distancing against the bridge. Barriers were put in place by the council in June to stop people from using, despite the bridge is a key cross-site over the river Taff for walkers, joggers, and cyclists. What are residences in Bute park feeling when they finally have Blackweir Bridge back to service.

Lucas, a cyclist.

“I love the park and crossing the bridge. I am glad it is opened again and it made a difference to the bike rides I do, when it was closed I have to go further around to cross the river that I couldn’t just go to the counter side of the river.”

Hannah, a walker.

”It’s good to see this bridge open again although it is too narrow that I probably won’t walk on it at the moment, it will be safe if there is no pandemic. That’s why I am wearing a face mask. This bridge is busy today with so many people crossing the river without a face mask.”

Simon, a cyclist who ride once a week.

”How surprising this bridge is fixed by Cardiff University. Before this bridge is opened, people who come here have to walk a loop to go to the other side. I saw the news feed on Facebook which talks about the re-opened of this bridge, so I change my route for this time. Usually, I will choose another bridge at the end of the path. Since we are at the open place, I think we are safe.”

Mike Gaunt, a regular jogger.

“It is great to see it opened again. I jog four times a week, and this bridge could get me to access the park a lot easier. It’s re-opened seems like that it’s the end of COVID to me, I guess. But I know it is not. I am happy it opened.”
