Over 180 volunteers slept on the streets of Cardiff this November to raise awareness of the issue of homelessness in the city.
The charity Llamau held the event “180 people sleep out” in Cardiff Central Youth Club on Nov 12, 2015.
“The charity’s event was done to bring in much needed funds and it captured the imagination of the general public,” said by Richard Lewis, public affairs & events manager in Llamau. “There’s been lots of media interest in the organisation and hopefully it will get people talking and thinking about homeless in a different way.”
According to Richard, all the campaigns are important to get local business and organisations involved to ensure we can have a collective social response to homelessness and it’s not something that’s ignored by people. “We are intending on running sleep out again next year in November, ” he explains. “Second ‘Illustrating Homelessness’ event would be held on June next year. We have asked celebrities to draw and sign pictures of their homes or houses, then auction off to the highest bidder to raise money for Llamau.”
Richard thought it’s important for us to broaden the understanding of what it means to be homeless in Wales and for people to understand that it can happen to everyone.
