Residents in Cardiff are getting the chance to learn an ancient Chinese form of self-defence through new weekly classes.

The Tai Chi sessions are taught by volunteer teacher Zhiling Zhou currently who has 5 years of experience.

“I have studied Tai Chi since the pandemic. It not only strengthens my body but also regulates my mood,” Zhiling said, “I hope residents can feel the charm of Tai Chi and benefit from it.”

Tai Chi was originated during the mid-17th century in Wenxian county in Jiaozuo, Henan province of China. It is a traditional physical exercise, characterized by relaxed, circular movements. It needs for perfect coordination of breathing and movement, according to the the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Tai Chi was inscribed as Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2020. Statistics show that more than 100 million people from over 150 countries and regions practice Tai Chi.

There is a positive effect of Tai Chi to improve physical performance, study says, individuals with different chronic diseases, such as osteoarthritis and heart disease, can engage in this type of exercise and relieve their symptoms.

“This is my first time to learn Tai Chi. It helps my balance and makes my joints feel better,” Mrs. Machado said.

After finishing exercise, Mrs. Machado shared her thoughts

Tai Chi is not only a form of exercise but also provides residents with an opportunity to socialize with others over exercises, enhancing community cohesion.

“This course will be held every Friday at 10am at the Riverside community activity center. We welcome all ages of residents, no matter they have experience or not,” said Thomas Clarke, the activities co-ordinator from Cardiff Met Neighbourhood Sport, “Our goal is to get people moving, we want everyone come here to exercise rather than at home.”

In the future, Riverside Community plans to hire more professional teachers of Tai Chi and hold outdoor activities, hoping to encourage more residents to participate in sports.
