Swimmers in Cardiff are signing a petition to save pools from high energy bills

Heating a public swimming pool complex now can cost over £300,000. Swimmers in Cardiff are signing a petition to save pools because swimming pools cannot serve the public as before.

People may exercise less because of swimming pools closing or reducing opening time.

Swimmers in Cardiff are being encouraged to sign a petition to protect pools around the country, following the announced closure of a pool in the city.

The charity Swim England wants the government to do more to protect pools as the cost of heating water starts to soar.

“I’d encourage all swimmers, divers, artistic swimmers, water polo players plus everyone who relies on a pool for recreational use or their mental and physical wellbeing to add their name to this petition,” said Jane Nickerson, Swim England chief executive.

“The Government needs to recognise how important they are to millions of people and give them the financial assistance beyond the initial six months to cope with soaring energy costs.

Charitable Trusts Freedom Leisure has announced the temporary closure of pools at the end of October. A hundred pools might shut in the coming months.

Pools are under threat because of high energy bills. The Petition to #SaveOurPools states pools are already closing and down the country and without additional support this situation will only get worse.

The petition states: “Swimming pools and leisure centres are vital to the health and wellbeing of the country, reducing pressures on the NHS as well as being the place where millions learn how to be safe in the water.

Jane Nickerson, Swim England chief executive, hoped all related to Swim England could approve the petition.

“Millions rely on the water to help manage health conditions, saving the NHS more than £350 million a year,” said Nickerson.

“The Government needs to recognise how important they are to millions of people and give them the financial assistance beyond the initial six months to cope with soaring energy costs. “

Swimming pools need a large sum of money to heat, especially considering energy crisis.

High energy bills have a bad influence on people across Europe. Governments have taken measures to control costs.

In France, water temperatures at public swimming pools have also been reduced by 1 degree Celsius.

“Heating a public swimming pool complex now costs over £300,000, up from under £100,000,” Greenwich Leisure Limited (GLL) said.

“Not providing the support needed will lead to widespread service failure and put increased pressure on the NHS and social care system.  “

“Please sign the petition and let’s all send a message to the Government they’ll find hard to ignore.”
