Did you know there’s a Welsh place name in Nepal and five thousand Welsh speakers in Patagonia?

In July this year the Welsh government announced a new Welsh language strategy, Cymraeg 2050. But what is Welsh’s influence around the world and how did the language spread as far as Argentina?

Half a million people in Wales speak Cymraeg (Welsh) and are proud to champion their Welsh heritage through the medium of language. This influence is far from constrained to Wales’s borders as settlers as early as 40 AD spread the language through naming the places they discovered. The Welsh government is hoping to expand the language’s influence through the Cymraeg 2050 initiative which aims to increase the number of Welsh speakers in Wales to one million by 2050. Check out the following explainer video and infographic for a brief history of the influence of Cymraeg around the world.
