Campaigners aiming to stop Llandaff Meadow from being turned into a football pitch are optimistic after lodging an application to register the land as a Village Green.
Llandaff residents started a campaign to save the meadow after Cardiff Metropolitan University put in a planning application to Cardiff Council last year.
The Save Llandaff Meadow campaign argues the land is popular with dog walkers and cyclists and should be protected.
Llandaff campaigners lodged an application on February 28 to the council’s legal department to register the meadow as a Village Green.
The Commons Registration Act 1965 provides the right to apply to register land as a green if it has been used by local people for lawful pastimes for at least 20 years. This can include using the land without permission, force or secrecy.
This will be the second application to the council regarding the future of the meadow.
The application was signed by the Chairman of The Llandaff Society, Geoff Barton-Greenwood, and was accompanied by a number of witness statements, but Llandaff resident John Higgins is sure more will be required.
“I will email supporters within a week or two to provide an outline and details of how to submit further statements,” said Mr Higgins.
“If the application is successful it will prevent development of Llandaff Meadow and ensure that it is safeguarded for future generations.”
Mr Barton-Greenwood said: “After a very careful preparation with the legal officer of Cardiff City Council we are now awaiting further developments.
“We believe our application is well founded considering Cardiff Metropolitan University are fairly new on the scene.”
