Summer is officially here according to Cardiff Council.
To mark the change in the weather Cardiff Council have changed garden waste collection back to a summer timetable meaning a two week collection cycle in time for the summer gardening months.
Previously garden waste collection was on a winter timetable which meant it was collected sporadically in periods ranging from two weeks to a month depending on your area. This would have been adequate given the lack of gardening that occurs in the winter months had it not been for the shortage of food waste bags over the Christmas period which meant some families were putting their food waste into garden waste bags.
The move to a more frequent recycling calendar may align with a change of the seasons, but it also comes at a time when Cardiff Council are being threatened with a fine of £800,000 for not reaching their recycling targets.For the 2013/14 fiscal year they were set a recycling target of 52 per cent, but only achieved 50 per cent.
They were the only council in Wales to miss the 52 per cent target. The target was set by the Welsh Assembly to align with EU recycling guidelines and if Cardiff fail to reach their target again then a maximum fine of £800,000 could be imposed by the Welsh Assembly.
The new target, set by the Welsh Assembly, is a rate of 58 per cent by 2016 which Cardiff’s Environment Committee stressed is “very high” in a letter addressed to Councillor Bob Derbyshire, the Cabinet Member for the Environment, late last year.
The new fortnightly collection dates will be issued by Cardiff Council through a press release, an update on the recycling section on their website and the April edition of the Capital Times will also make reference to it.

- Radyr/Pentyrch/Morganstown – March 30
- Llandaff/Llandaff North – March 31
- Pentwyn – April 1
- Llanrumney/Pontprennau/Old St Mellons – April 2
- Llanishen – April 4
- Ely – April 7
- Riverside – April 8
- Penylan/Plasnewydd – April 9
- Rumney – April 10
