PLAID Cymru’s Tariq Awan has been elected councillor after winning the Grangetown by-election, taking the seat from Labour.
“I feel shocked, but excited to begin,” said the newly elected Coun Awan.
Five parties fought for the seat which was left open after the death of Labour councillor Chris Lomax. The result leaves Grangetown with two Labour councillors and one from Plaid Cymru.
The turn-out was recorded at 21.84% with 2,785 ballots counted. Plaid Cymru took 41.1% of the vote with 1,164 votes. Second-placed Labour took 37.1% of the vote with 1,049 votes.
