WORK around Burnham Avenue’s shops will finish in two weeks, as the first phase of Llanrumney’s makeover is completed.
Permission to begin regeneration work in the area was granted by Cardiff Council in 2013 and work started three weeks ago.
The scheme involves a complete revamp of the pavements, restoring them to their original colour and lifting up and relaying any patches that have sunk.
The old tree pits will be replaced with a new and more level design.
The development is also adding more cycle stands, bins, parking bays and bollards.
Katie Bishop, who works at the hair and beauty salon Ellegance, said: “The revamp at the bottom of Burnham Avenue will make a big impact on the community and improve the image of Llanrumney. The area does need a bit of looking after as people say, but it will be an awesome environment when it’s done.”
The work has been contracted out to Horan Civil Engineers, a Cardiff-based company.
Joe Sheehan, a contractor for Horan, said: “It does look a bit of a mess here at the moment, but you know, when we’re done, you will see the change.
“It will make a big difference. The feedback from the shopkeepers has already been positive. You can’t please everybody because of the disruption, but I think by the time we’re done and we’ve got rid of all the dips, people will like it.”
Councillor Keith Jones praised the redevelopment, saying: “It’s great news for Llanrumney residents that we’ve begun the Burnham Avenue Shopping Parade regeneration scheme.
“Early next year shop-front improvements will begin. These local shops have always been popular with residents and as local councillors we are delighted to have achieved this for our community.”
