THIS Sunday sees the return of the annual Roath Christmas Craft Market, raising money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
It is the sixth year the event has been held and this year organisers are hoping to raise more than the £506 from last year.
Linda Ditchburn, who helps organise the event, said: “I hope we do raise more. I know times are hard but hopefully people will come out and support us for a good cause.”
For Linda it is about more than just raising money, it is a way to remember a friend, Dr Rowena Forbes, who died from cancer at the age of 44.
“She died from breast cancer five years ago and for two of those she received a lot of support from Macmillan.”
“A lot of people don’t realise that Macmillan don’t just offer emotional support, they also offer money and grants for people struggling to pay the bills while they are having treatment.”
“People suffering from cancer often get cold more easily and spend more money on heating as a result. These grants help people to be able to afford this.”
Linda says the idea came from the popular Macmillan coffee mornings. She said: “Macmillan do a massive fundraising drive in September and October with their coffee mornings.”
“We wanted to help out, and we thought we would do a Christmas craft market as we do most of our business around that time of year.”
The event on Sunday November 20, includes hourly raffles with handmade prizes and stalls showing local arts and crafts and festive food and drink.
Father Christmas will also be there to listen to the wishes of children and adults alike.
The event is at Mackintosh Sports and Community Centre, the location of the regular weekly Roath Craft Market which Linda also helps organise, between 4pm and 8pm.
