THREE Radyr schools have raised £3,500 for Alzheimer’s Society Cymru.
Radyr Primary, Bryn Deri Primary and Radyr Comprehensive raised the money through collections at Christmas performances and an enterprise scheme.
Alzheimer’s Society Cymru is Radyr and Morganstown Association’s charity of the year. Since July, groups and associations in Radyr and Morganstown have raised £5,400.
Cheryl George, community fundraiser for South Wales at Alzheimer’s Society Cymru, said: “We were delighted to be selected as the Radyr and Morganstown Association’s charity of the year in 2018.
“There is a real passion within the community to help those living with dementia today as well as supporting research for the future.”
With the support of Ms George and Alzheimer’s Society Cymru, a new fundraising group has been formed.
Ms George said: “This will help maximise the fundraising potential this year and act as a legacy beyond being the chosen charity this year.
“It’s fantastic to see the whole community come together, uniting against dementia.”
The group is busy organising events including a traditional Beetle Drive in February and a music event in March. The bulk of the fundraising will take in May at Radyr and Morganstown’s annual festival, two weeks of events including concerts, fairs and a parade.
Claire Davies, headteacher of Bryn Deri Primary School, said: “At school, all the donations from parents at our Christmas performances went and the children were involved in the singing at the Christmas tree lighting event this year. We are really proud that we managed to raise £995 for the charity.”
On Friday, representatives from the school and David Silver, chairman of Radyr and Morganstown’s Association, presented the money to Ms George.
Radyr Comprehensive organised an enterprise week in which they sold chocolate and other small gifts.
Mr Silver said: “The aim of the association is to make life better for people living and working in the area but also to raise money for charity.
“Over the whole year we all try and fundraise for the charity. Last year we supported St John’s Ambulance and we raised about £12,000. This year we are hoping to raise about £15,000 as we are already doing really and hadn’t expected to raise so much this early on.”
