MENNA Fitzpatrick secured a historic gold medal for Team GB at the Winter Paralympics in Pyeongchang as she won the Visually-Impaired Slalom on Sunday.
Welsh-based Fitzpatrick, who has only five per cent vision, and her guide, Jen Kehoe, beat Slovakia’s Henrieta Farkasova and Natalia Subrtova by 0.66 seconds in their final event of the games.
The 19-year-old skier trailed the Slovakian pair by 0.66 seconds after the first run, but produced a stunning second run to topple Farkasova, who had won gold in every event she had competed in during the games.
Team GB have only won gold at the Winter Paralympics once before, when Kelly Gallagher triumphed in the downhill event in Sochi in 2014.
This victory took the pair’s medal tally to four, including two silvers and a bronze, a feat made all the more impressive when looking at Team GB’s overall haul of seven medals.
The British team reached their target of between six and 12 medals from UK Sport, and matched their predicted seven medals.
