Cardiff City: Max Watters a fitness doubt for Championship fixture against Barnsley

The striker signed from League Two Crawley Town 10 days ago

MICK McCarthy has revealed that new Cardiff City signing Max Watters is a doubt for Wednesday night’s game against Barnsley.

Speaking at Tuesday morning’s pre-match press conference ahead of his first game in charge, McCarthy admitted that Greg Cunningham and Marlon Pack were on their way back from recent injuries, but had less good news about the January recruit.

“Max Watters pulled out of training yesterday with a sore Achilles which is disappointing for me and even more disappointing for him having just had his big move,” the City boss said. “We’ll have to see how he is today.”

Striker Watters joined Cardiff from Crawley Town 10 days ago, having scored 13 goals in 14 games in League Two this season.

The 21-year-old made his Bluebirds debut on the left wing against Queens Park Rangers last Wednesday, but was substituted after 55 minutes as Cardiff went on to lose 1-0 – a result that ended up costing Neil Harris his job.

Mark Harris replaced Watters in that game so could be handed a start, or it may present Josh Murphy or Junior Hoilett with an opportunity to impress.

Watters was heavily linked with a move to rivals Swansea City before arriving in the Welsh capital to add more firepower to the Bluebirds frontline.

Right-back Perry Ng joined three days later, and McCarthy has suggested “there might be some movement” in the rest of the transfer window, but would have a better idea after the trip to Oakwell tomorrow.
