Residents in Victoria Park area advised to be vigilant after spate of burglaries

POLICE are asking people living in the Victoria Park area of Canton to be vigilant after a string of house and shed burglaries.

This month three incidents were reported on Greenwich Road, where four bikes were stolen from a shed and garage. A greenhouse was also damaged in an attempt to break into a second garage.

There has also been a report of two individuals trying house doors in Daisy Street, while a house burglary in Fern Street is also under investigation.

All incidents occurred at night.

“Being a victim of any burglary is a traumatic experience and having your home burgled is particularly distressing,” said Inspector Kevin Deacy for Ely and Canton.

“In addition to the emotional distress, there is also the inconvenience and cost of replacing items and repairing damage.

“While we don’t wish to alarm the community, we would like to raise awareness.”

In connection with suspicious behaviour in the Victoria Park area police are appealing for the public to identify an individual caught on CCTV footage.

South Wales Police are appealing to the public to identify this individual in connection to suspicious behaviour near Victoria Park

Anyone with information on the man is asked to contact South Wales Police on 101 or via direct message on social media quoting occurrence *026188.

Alternatively, anyone can report information anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

“Officers have been doing increased patrols in the Victoria Park area, particularly in the hours of darkness, to prevent crime and catch the person or persons responsible,” added Inspector Kevin Deacy.

“For that reason, some of our patrols are in unmarked vehicles and our officers in plain clothes so residents might not necessarily notice a police presence.

“While we continue with increased patrols, we also ask residents to be vigilant.”

Police have issued the following advice to residents:

• If you have CCTV, ensure that it is turned on and recording, particularly at night.

• Be vigilant, please report any suspicious people or activity straight away by calling 999 so officers can conduct the necessary checks.

• If you have an external light, ensure that it is working. Burglars do not want to be seen.

• Lock your garden gates to prevent easy access to your property.

• Lock all windows and doors.

• If you have a burglar alarm, ensure that it is working and switched on.

• Keep vehicle keys and valuables out of sight.
