The purpose-built convenience store will create around 15 local jobs
CO-OP has confirmed that it has plans for a new food store on Dumballs Road in Butetown.
The store, which is not expected to open for the next 18 to 24 months, will create around 15 new local jobs.
It will invest around £650,000 to create the purpose-built convenience store on the site of a former industrial unit.
The new-look Co-op will run on 100% renewable electricity, and include customer car parking, bakery goods, and a focus on fresh, healthy produce, ready meals, free-from and vegan products.
Students who are TOTUM card-holders, the new name for the NUS Extra scheme, can get a 10% discount off groceries at the Co-op.
A spokesperson for Co-op, said: “We are delighted that an opportunity has arisen to serve the community, and we will work to develop the range, choice, products and services locally that will create a really compelling offer.
“Co-op is committed to connecting communities. Our members also make a difference to local causes, with Co-op now donating 2% to community causes every time a member swipes their membership card when buying own-branded products.”
This comes four months after Cardiff Council announced plans to build 2,000 homes and commercial units between the River Taff and Dumballs Road as part of a regeneration scheme.
The Taff Embankment scheme will open up access to the riverside and connect the city to Cardiff Bay with an uninterrupted pathway.
The development could also see apartment blocks between six and eight storeys around semi-private garden squares being secured as the first phase in autumn 2022.
The Co-op has around 4.6 million active Members, and alongside Food, it operates Co-op Funeralcare, Insurance, Health and Legal Services.
